Bangladeshi tanneries and leather workshops produce a full range of leather, from wet blue to finished leather, and leather products ranging from bags and belts to shoes. The majority of the sector’s production takes place in and around Dhaka, most notably in
Hazaribagh. Over the past decade, the export value of Bangladeshi leather and leather goods has grown significantly.

Compared to ten years ago, the production of leather and related products has grown by about 50 percent and the country now has approximately 2-3 percent market share of global leather production. This growth potential presents opportunities, as well as challenges related to the labor conditions of workers in the country’s tanning and leather industries.

But our government has taken a few policies and steps to overcome the obstacles of this sector. Moving tanneries from Hazaribagh to Savar is the boldest decision. Modern facilities, compliance factory, the latest technology based machines are including to boost production. And worker safety, learning with working gonna make the sector full of skilled people. Now we are going explore top crust and wet blue supplier in Bangladesh below:

Crust Leather:

According to leather dictionary crust leather is the term applied to leather, which is dried after tanning but has not yet been dyed. In the case of chrome-tanned leather, this is known as “chrome crust” and, for vegetable-tanned leather, as “vegetable crust”. Crust leather is rarely processed as it is. Usually, the leather is dyed and finished before processing.

Wet Blue:

According to the leather dictionary, wet blue refers to moist chrome-tanned leather. In this phase, the leather is tanned, but neither dried, dyed nor finished. The bluish coloring is produced by the chrome tanning agent (Chromium (III) oxide), which is blue and is contained in the leather after tanning. Nowadays leather is dyed-through in multiple colors but the dyes have no opacity. In the case of bright leathers, the reverse of the finished leather retains the blueish colour of the chrome tanning agents. During tanning, the leather is bleached so that light colors can be achieved with better dying.

History of Leather Tanning of Bangladesh:

Basically, Cowhide handling is an old assembling sub-segment in Bangladesh with a long legacy of more than six decades. Mostly, the accessibility of indigenous crude material (covers up and skins) encouraged the setting up of the business in the mid-1940s in the then East Bengal. During the Pakistan time frame (1947-1971), the industry was running by non-Bengali vagrants from India, who had the learning and the know-how of the calfskin handling industry.

Around then, cowhide handling restricted to the creation of wet blue calfskin (semi-prepared tanned calfskin) and the non-Bengali merchants sent out an enormous piece of the product to West Pakistan for further handling and generation of calfskin products. A couple of little tanning units had a place with Bengali business people who prepared calfskin chiefly for the local market. Presently calfskin industry possesses just an unobtrusive situation in Bangladesh economy route beneath its actual potential. The export value of leather goods has more than doubled over the past decade, totaling US$ 249 million in 2014-2015. And earned $1.09 billion in the fiscal year 2017-18. According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data, Bangladesh earned $1.01 billion exporting leather, leather goods, and leather footwear, the only billion-dollar export earner after the apparel goods, in the fiscal year 2018-19.
